Perspectives: Artistic Practice and Research, IMBAS & Solstice
On September 24th, 2021, IMBAS and Solstice Arts Centre hosted a one-day, online gathering of artists and scholars to explore the relationship between research and artistic practice. Supporting the development of a community of artists and arts practice researchers within and beyond academic institutions, the event was funded under the Irish Research Council New Foundations 2020 scheme. This event included presentations by Danny McCarthy, Lisa McLoughlin, Wayne Jordan, Kathleen Turner, Brian Fay and Tríona Ní Shíocháin.
Solstice Arts Centre supports an ethos of equal opportunity that is multi-generational, multi-cultural, and multi-art. IMBAS is an Irish forum for artists and scholars working within and beyond the University sector who share an interest in arts practice research, particularly in the performing arts. IMBAS facilitates communication between institutions and individuals, promoting scholarly discourse and modes of practice concerning knowledge creation through performance and performance-related creative practice. Session 1
In session one, artists Kathleen Turner, Wayne Jordan and Lisa McLoughlin presented their work followed by a Q&A chaired by Aileen Dillane, Ethnomusicologist and Senior Lecturer in Music at the Irish World Academy, University of Limerick.
Book Launch
A new publication The Artist and Academia (Routledge 2021) was launched by artists Tríona Ní Shíocháin and Fióna Bolger and the editors of the publication Helen Phelan and Graham F. Welch.
Session 2
In session two, artists Danny McCarthy, Brian Fay, and Tríona Ní Síocháin presented their work followed by a Q&A chaired by Belinda Quirke, Director of Solstice.
Roundtable Discussion
During the roundtable, Helen Phelan, Professor of Arts Practice at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick, Olga Barry, Director of Kilkenny Arts Festival and Yvon Bonenfant, Head of Department, Theatre at UCC and leader of the MA Theatre and Performative Practices Performance and Activism theme, respond to the works, ideas and processes presented by the artists in the earlier sessions. This was chaired by Méabh Ní Fhuartháin, Lecturer & Ethnomusicologist, Head of Discipline at the Centre for Irish Studies, NUI Galway.
